Rajasthan Politics – Politics has heated up in Rajasthan over the recently passed Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Bill, 2025. Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasara criticized the bill, calling it a symbol of religious intolerance. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Affairs Jawahar Singh Bedam sharply retorted to Dotasara’s statement, saying that Congress leaders are upset with the law because it takes concrete steps against religious conversion.
Bedam angry at Congress statement
Bedam said, “Congress leaders, especially Govind Singh Dotasara, are upset with this law because it targets some of their key supporters. The purpose of this law is to prevent any person from converting to another religion through force or inducement.” He alleged that Dotasara’s statements regarding this law clearly indicate his support for a particular religion. Bedam stated that incidents involving intimidation or inducement to convert will no longer be tolerated in Rajasthan.
New Law – Strict Punishment and Fine
The Minister of State for Home Affairs stated that this law came into effect on November 29th, and under this law, anyone who forcibly or induces someone to convert someone will face a sentence of 7 to 14 years and a fine of up to 5 lakh rupees. Bedam also clarified that the government has initiated action against related organizations under this law, and anyone engaging in such activities will now be forced to think carefully before engaging in such activities.
Criticism of the Opposition – Government’s Tough Stance
Targeting the opposition, Bedam said that opposition leaders are misleading the public through statements on this issue, but the public has now understood that the Congress party supports those who force and induce conversions. Citing examples, he said that in the past, daughters were coerced or threatened into religious conversions, but now such practices will not be tolerated at any cost.
Purpose of the Law – Preventing Religious Conversion
This new law has been presented by the Rajasthan government as a historic step, designed to prevent crimes related to religious conversion. The current Rajasthan government states that this law gives people the right to maintain their religious freedom and is an attempt to end forced religious conversions.
Ultimatum – No one will be spared
Bedam also stated that after the implementation of this law, anyone attempting to force religious conversion under any circumstances will be subject to the law and strict action will be taken against them. He also conveyed the message that there will be no place for such illegal activities in Rajasthan.
