From Lahore to Mumbai – The Beginning of a Wonderful Journey
Born as Uma Kashyap in Lahore (present-day Pakistan) on February 24, 1927, Kamini grew up in an educated and prestigious family. Her father, Shivram Kashyap, was a renowned botanist. From childhood, she was involved in horse riding, Bharatnatyam, swimming, and various arts, which developed her into a versatile personality. Her acting career, which began with radio plays and theater, later reached new heights on the big screen.
“Neecha Nagar” was her first breakthrough
Kamini made her acting debut in 1946 with Chetan Anand’s film “Neecha Nagar.” This film, making history, became the Best Picture at the inaugural Cannes Film Festival and remains the only Indian film to win the Palme d’Or to date. This film established Kamini as a powerful and natural actress.
