Darbhanga (Bihar): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its second list for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, prominently featuring the name of popular folk singer Maithili Thakur. Maithili Thakur, who recently joined the BJP, has been nominated for the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga district.
Alinagar Assembly Constituency: A New Electoral Field
The Alinagar Assembly Constituency came into existence after the 2008 delimitation. Previously, it was part of the Manigachhi Assembly Constituency, and elections have been held only three times. The 2025 elections will be the fourth time this seat has been contested. Previous candidates have demonstrated their influence in the Alinagar seat, and it remains to be seen what charisma the BJP’s new candidate will display this time.
Abdul Bari Siddiqui’s Influence
Previously, the Alinagar assembly constituency was dominated by senior RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui. He won the seat twice in a row in 2010 and 2015. However, Abdul Bari Siddiqui has now become a member of the Bihar Legislative Council and has retired from electoral politics.
In the 2020 assembly elections, the RJD fielded Vinod Mishra from the Alinagar seat, denying Abdul Bari Siddiqui’s ticket, but this move failed. In the election, Mishri Lal Yadav of the VIP defeated Vinod Mishra of the RJD and captured the seat.
Maithili Thakur: From Singer to Leader
Maithili Thakur was born on July 25, 2000, in Madhubani district, Bihar. After her family settled in Delhi, Maithili began her education and music journey. She had a keen interest in classical music since childhood, and gradually became a renowned singer.
Maithili participated in major reality shows like ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs’ and ‘Indian Idol Junior,’ but made her mark as the first runner-up on ‘The Rising Star’ in 2017. Subsequently, her bhajans and folk songs went viral on social media, and she quickly became a favorite with millions of followers.
Her music reflects the sweetness and depth of folk tunes, and this is why her fans call her the ‘Junior Bihar Nightingale.’ Maithili Thakur has received numerous honors for her contributions, including the status of ‘Brand Ambassador’ from the Bihar government.
