Today marks 50 years of Bollywood’s historic film ‘Sholay’, released on 15 August 1975. Ramesh Sippy’s film not only changed the direction of cinema, but also immortalised characters like Gabbar, Jai, Veeru and Thakur. On the completion of 50 years of the film, Dharmendra, who played Veeru in it, shared some fun memories related to its shooting.
Dharmendra revealed that he never thought that ‘Sholay’ would prove to be a milestone in his career. He said, “We worked very hard on the film, but I never imagined that it would become such a big hit. Shooting on the outskirts of Bangalore was tiring, and there was no hotel nearby. We had to drive 50 kilometers to the location every day, but a lot of fun memories were made during this time. Hema ji was with me, and Jaya was also there. She was pregnant at that time.” Not only this, the tickets of the film were also sold in black at that time. Sholay had a budget of Rs 3 crore at that time, and it grossed a whopping Rs 15.50 crore.
This film will always be remembered not just for its dialogues but also for its cast and their brilliant acting.
